Jim Collins in Good to Great said that you need to get the right people on the bus, then the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats and only then do you figure out where to drive it. I don’t agree with the last point, you can in fact know where you want to drive the bus before you recruit and select the right people.

This then begs the question as to what are your reasons for wanting a bus, that is, a High-Performance Team? Also, what personal and professional goals do you have…

Learning how your gut works, how to recognize patterns, and how to trust your gut can help you make better decisions. “Trust your hunches. They’re usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level.”

Introduction

This post describes how gut reactions work, the link with intuition, and how experience and practising trusting your gut can help you make better decisions.

The old saying “trust your gut” refers to trusting your feelings, your intuition, trusting your inner voice; with the “gut reaction” or “gut feeling” being more profound than your conscious mind. Gut feeling is intuition, which can be a…

Your management style infects everyone around you for better or worse. The way you behave, the language you use, your attitude and biases all influence others. As a manager, a role model, a person in authority, some people will copy you verbatim, so it’s worth thinking about just how much you influence others? The objective, of course, is to have a highly positive influence and, in so doing, make yourself an effective leader; after all, staff will seek to identify with and emulate you. Leadership behaviours propagate downwards, infecting the entire organization.

People who are not in a management position simply do not understand how much effort, skill and knowledge is required to do the job and be a good manager at the same time. Whilst being a manager is by and large highly satisfying, it is not easy, it is filled with a huge variety of daily challenges and stresses and takes a particular type of person to do it well. …

Leadership — “One of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth.” James Burns.

Early in my career, I did exactly that, I resigned from a fantastic management position because I could no longer have a professional relationship with my manager. I didn’t want to leave, the company had been extremely good to me, they invested in me and took a risk by giving me a major project at a young age. There was no doubt that I was destined for greater things. Yet, stressed and not wanting to — I resigned. Why? …

“I couldn’t wait to get to work each day; we did fantastic things, couldn’t believe I got paid to do it.” A high-performance team member.

Generally, people are interested in High-Performance Teams (HPTs) because they aspire to something greater than what they are a part of today, they also want to know if it’s something they could create themselves. But the main reason is that they are currently managing a team that suffers from common team dysfunctions:

  • The manager has an ineffective management style.
  • Lack of respect for the manager.
  • Poor management communication.
  • Low morale and job satisfaction.
  • Recurring problems…

Leadership — “One of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth.” James Burns.

Many employees in organisations today are dissatisfied with their jobs, feeling economically trapped, angry, frustrated, and unable to better their situation. The brave move on; they are the risk-takers, and they find a way to do better. But many remain trapped. What’s going on? What are the causes behind poor management and unhappy employees, and when did it all begin?

The cause of this dissatisfaction may stretch back to the early 1880s and the Industrial Revolution were cotton mills enforced a type of control we…

Imagine you’re the coach of a sports team

Your team is not playing as well as you would like or as well as they should be. They keep dropping the ball, missing goal opportunities, fumbling, getting into fights and ultimately losing matches. There is only one person to look to you, the coach. We all know that in situations like this, it’s not the team that’s at fault, it’s the coach, the coaching style and the training methods. In a situation like this, you’re not only letting yourself down, you’re letting the whole team down and their families.

Worse still, as the coach you are responsible for the…

I have mentioned in an earlier Post that I worked in Port Moresby for five years managing a Technology company. One of the businesses under management was an ISP (Internet Service Provider) that used a Microwave transmission technology to connect homes and businesses. A Microwave Dish attached the building would receive a signal from a local Microwave transmitter. This is called ‘line of sight’ as both the dish and transmitter need to be pointed at each other.

Port Moresby is subject to almost daily tropical storms or downpours, these combined with many run-down and dilapidated buildings regularly cause the dishes…
